TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A high-level Iranian delegation, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, arrived in Islamabad on Saturday, April 11, 2026, to attend pivotal talks with the United States aimed at de-escalating the Middle East conflict. However, a deep shadow of distrust continues to loom over the diplomatic efforts between the two nations.
Upon his arrival in Pakistan, Qalibaf emphasized that while Iran possesses the good intentions necessary to negotiate, it does not fully trust the United States. "We have good intentions, but we do not trust," Qalibaf remarked, as quoted by Xinhua.
Recalling previous diplomatic friction, he noted that Iran had been attacked twice in less than a year, even as negotiation processes were underway. "They attacked us and committed numerous war crimes," Qalibaf stated, according to a report by Anadolu.
Nevertheless, Qalibaf left the door open for a potential agreement, provided the United States is willing to respect Iran's rights and demonstrate sincere intent.
Conversely, he asserted that if the negotiations are merely employed as a political tactic or a manipulative maneuver, Iran is prepared to rely on its own strength to safeguard its national interests.
During the visit, the Iranian delegation is scheduled to meet with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Iranian media reported that formal negotiations with the United States are set to take place at the Serena Hotel in Islamabad on Saturday evening, contingent upon a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of Iran's frozen assets.
