Iran Releases Detained Japanese Citizen, Tokyo Confirms

6 hours ago 19

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran has released a Japanese citizen who was detained since January, Tokyo said on Tuesday, April 7, 2026. Kyodo News reported, as cited by Bangkok Post, that the individual is believed to be the head of the Tehran bureau of the NHK broadcasting station.

This is the second release after the Japanese government announced last month that another Japanese citizen had been freed by Iran.

"The Japanese embassy in Iran has confirmed that a Japanese national who was detained by Iranian authorities on Jan 20 was released on April 6 local time," said government spokesperson Minoru Kihara.

"The ambassador in Iran directly met that person after release and confirmed they were in good health," Kihara told reporters.

NHK has not been able to immediately confirm the report.

Earlier media reports stated that the head of the NHK bureau, who was arrested on January 20, was sent to a prison known as a place of detention for political prisoners.

A Japanese government spokesperson at the time told reporters that a Japanese citizen had been detained on that date but refused to provide further details.

NHK also declined to comment.
