The situation was further complicated by the emergence of a video deemed suspicious because Netanyahu's fingers appeared to number six, sparking speculation about the use of AI technology or deepfakes. However, the video was confirmed to be genuine; the visual anomaly was merely a shadow effect on the palm of his hand that was not captured perfectly by the camera. Shutterstock

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The corruption trial of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will resume on Sunday, April 12, 2026. This comes after the national emergency status imposed during the war with Iran has been lifted.

The decision was announced by the Israeli court spokesperson on Thursday, just hours after the state of emergency was lifted.

In the court's official statement, it was mentioned that with the end of the state of emergency, the judicial system would return to normal operation.

"With the lifting of the state of emergency and the return of the judicial system to work, hearings will resume as usual," the statement said, as reported by The New Arab.

The court also confirmed that the trial will take place between Sundays and Wednesdays.

Emergency Status Lifted after Ceasefire

The previous state of emergency was imposed following the armed conflict between Israel and Iran, which led to the closure of schools and workplaces.

Iran launched ballistic missile and drone attacks on Israel following a sudden joint airstrike carried out by Israel and the United States on February 28.

The attack was claimed to be aimed at preventing Iran from expanding its military power abroad, halting its nuclear program, and promoting regime change.

The situation eased after no more reports of Iranian missile attacks since 03:00 a.m. local time on Wednesday, which was then followed by a ceasefire agreement.

However, tensions have yet to dissipate completely. Israel's brutal attack on Lebanon, claimed to target the Hezbollah group, reportedly could disrupt the ceasefire that has been achieved.

Long-Running Trial Since 2020

According to Middle East Monitor, Netanyahu's trial has been ongoing since 2020 and has been repeatedly postponed due to state obligations. He was indicted in 2019 on charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust after a lengthy investigation.

Netanyahu is the first serving Israeli prime minister to be indicted. He denies all the accusations. If found guilty, he could face imprisonment.

Amidst the ongoing legal process, Trump also voiced support for Netanyahu by urging Israeli President Isaac Herzog to grant pardon. Trump argued that Netanyahu's court appearances could disrupt the government's duties.

However, Herzog's office stated that the pardon process would follow standard procedures.

The Department of Pardons in the Ministry of Justice will gather various considerations before submitting them to the president's legal advisor to formulate recommendations. In practice, pardons are rarely granted while the trial is ongoing.

This corruption case, along with Hamas' attack on Israel in October 2023, is said to have affected Netanyahu's political position. Israel is scheduled to hold elections next October, and his government coalition is expected to face the risk of defeat.
