Israel Threatens Iran with Response Similar to Actions Against Hamas, Hezbollah

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel has threatened Iran with what it has done to Hamas in Gaza. Israeli Defense Minister Katz warned on Thursday, May 8, 2025, a few days after the attack on Ben Gurion Airport by Houthi militia backed by Iran.

"I warn... Iranian leaders who finance, arm and exploit the Houthi terrorist organization: the proxy system is terminated and the axis of evil has collapsed," Katz said, as reported by Al Arabiya.

"You are directly responsible. What we have done to Hezbollah in Beirut, to Hamas in Gaza, to (now ousted Syrian president Bashar) Assad in Damascus, we will do to you in Tehran too," he continued.

Iran is accused of forming a resistance axis against Israel along with Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Yemeni Houthi. Hezbollah began launching attacks in October 2023 to support its ally Hamas.

Prior to Katz, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed on Sunday to retaliate against the Yemeni Houthi and Iran, who are seen as supporters of the Houthi

This came after the militant group attacked major Israeli airport areas, injuring six people and prompting several major airlines to suspend flights.

The attack occurred just hours before the Israeli army confirmed the mobilization of "tens of thousands" of reserve troops to expand the 19-month war in Gaza against Palestinian Hamas fighters.

The military confirmed that the attack, which created a large crater around Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, was launched from Yemen and had taken place. Israel claimed there were several attempts to intercept the missile.

In a video published on Telegram as reported by Arab News, Netanyahu said that Israel had acted against Iran-backed groups in the past and "will act in the future."

"It will not happen in one bang, but there will be many bangs," Netanyahu said, without further explanation.

Later, Netanyahu wrote that Israel would respond to Iran at a "time and place of our choosing."

A police video showed officers near a large crater in the ground, with a control tower visible in the background. No damage to airport infrastructure was reported.

Police confirmed the "impact of the missile" at Israel's primary international gateway. A photographer noted that the missile struck near the Terminal 3 parking area, the largest terminal at the airport. The crater was only a few hundred meters from the runway.

Iran has denied any involvement in supporting the Houthis in the attack on Israel.
