TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Few knew that National Democrat (NasDem) Party General Chair Surya Paloh visited President Prabowo Subianto's private residence in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, in mid-February 2026. Surya and Prabowo brought only small entourages and tightly concealed the meeting, which took place several days before the President departed for Washington, D.C., United States.
It was the first one-on-one meeting between Surya and Prabowo since the Gerindra Party General Chair was inaugurated as president on October 20, 2024. The two last met when Prabowo, then president-elect, visited NasDem's headquarters in Gondangdia, Central Jakarta, in March 2024.
Despite arriving with limited entourages, Surya and Prabowo chose to speak privately for more than an hour. "It is true that the two met," said Gerindra Executive Chair Sufmi Dasco Ahmad when asked for comment on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
Details of the conversation between the two politicians—both of whom once took part in Golkar's presidential convention—nonetheless leaked to their colleagues. Three politicians close to Surya and a Gerindra official said the discussion initially touched on the parliamentary threshold. In February 2024, the Constitutional Court issued a ruling ordering the House of Representatives (DPR) to recalculate the requirements for parties to enter legislature.
