TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Peru's Foreign Ministry announced that its government has condemned Iran's policies and severed diplomatic relations with the country.
As quoted by ANTARA, the ministry said on Tuesday evening that the government had decided to sever diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, citing its longstanding commitment to peace, respect for international law, and the defense of democracy.
In the ministry’s statement, the government is deeply concerned about Iran’s stringent restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which it believes are disrupting international trade.
Peru also condemned Iran’s actions that obstruct the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), including its repeated refusal to grant inspectors access to nuclear facilities.
According to Anadolu, the decision follows a recent military escalation in tensions between Iran and the United States. Exchanging strikes are intensifying instability across the Middle East and fueling concerns over maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite the decision to sever diplomatic relations, Peru said consular ties would remain in place to safeguard the interests and citizens of both countries in accordance with the applicable Vienna Conventions.
The Peruvian government conveyed the decision to Iran through a diplomatic note delivered via Iran’s embassy in Ecuador, which is also accredited to Peru.
