Pupuk Indonesia Explores Fertilizer Exports Amid Iran War Supply Crunch

2 hours ago 14

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The CEO of PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero), Rahmad Pribadi, is considering the possibility of exporting fertilizers to countries facing a shortage due to the Iran-Israel war. "We have the capacity to export, so we will allocate it to friendly countries," Rahmad said at the DPR Complex, Senayan, on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

Rahmad emphasized that, before deciding to export, Pupuk Indonesia will prioritize domestic demand.

"Our estimated urea demand is around 6.3 million tons. Our production is almost 8 million, so we have an excess that we can export."

He did not specify the destination of the exports to friendly countries. However, he mentioned that Pupuk Indonesia sells fertilizer to Australia, India, and other countries in Southeast Asia. "We will continue to do so. The difference is that today, maybe they are facing difficulties," Rahmad said.

The difficulties mentioned by Rahmad refer to the impact of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which is the distribution route for 30 percent of global fertilizer needs. As a result of the closure, Rahmad mentioned that around 10 million tons of urea fertilizer have not been distributed.
