TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Steam has apologized for the error in the Indonesian Game Rating System (IGRS) rating display for games on its platform, which has drawn public attention.
Steam explained that a technical error and miscommunication resulted in the ratings being displayed inaccurately and incompletely.
"A technical bug and miscommunication resulted in incorrect and incomplete ratings being temporarily displayed on Steam between April 2 and April 5," Steam wrote in an official statement, quoted from Antara on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
Due to the error, Steam has removed the IGRS rating displayed for games on its platform to minimize potential confusion for users.
Valve, the owner of Steam, said it has been in communication with Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital for over two years to establish an age rating display system for Steam customers in Indonesia.
The system aims to use information provided by developers about their games to determine age ratings based on IGRS regulations.
"These ratings are intended to give customers information about the content and intended minimum age group of each game," Steam stated.
But Steam acknowledged that several preparatory steps remain before displaying the approved IGRS rating to customers in Indonesia.
"We apologize for the confusion this error may have caused," Steam said.
Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is conducting an in-depth investigation into the irregularities in the IGRS ratings for games on the Steam platform.
Sonny Hendra Sudaryana, Director of Digital Ecosystem Development at the ministry, said his office acknowledged that some games had IGRS ratings that did not reflect their content. For example, PUBG received a 3+ rating, while Upin Ipin Universe was intended for ages 18+.
"We find this odd and highly unusual, which is why we are conducting this investigation to determine the underlying problem, both internally at the ministry and externally at Steam," Sonny said.
Sonny added that this investigation was conducted openly and involved various stakeholders, such as gaming communities, associations, and game industry players, to identify the cause of the irregularities in game classification on the Steam platform.
