TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump has stated that Iran has agreed to surrender its stockpile of enriched uranium. The announcement was made on Thursday, April 16, amid ongoing negotiations to resolve the conflict that has persisted since February 28, 2026.
As reported by TRT World, Trump indicated that the two nations are now on the verge of a breakthrough. "We're very close to making a deal with Iran," he told reporters at the White House.
"We had to make sure that Iran never gets a nuclear weapon... They've totally agreed to that. They've agreed to almost everything," he added.
Trump further noted that Iran has consented to relinquish its enriched uranium reserves. "They’ve agreed to give us back the nuclear dust," Trump said, using his own terminology for the uranium that the United States contends could be utilized in the production of nuclear weapons.
Military Pressure and Blockade
According to Arab News, the United States had previously threatened to persist with air strikes and maintain a naval blockade against Iran should Tehran reject the proposed terms.
"If Iran chooses poorly, then they will have a blockade and bombs dropping on infrastructure, power, and energy," said US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) claimed to have effectively halted Iranian maritime trade activities. Officials stated they had turned back 13 vessels attempting to depart from Iranian ports.
Additionally, the US government has imposed fresh sanctions on the Iranian oil sector. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that these measures specifically target the regime's elites.
In response, Iran warned that it would retaliate against such coercive measures. The head of Iran's military command center, Ali Abdollahi, declared that their forces would not permit exports or imports to transit the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, or the Red Sea if the pressure continues.
Negotiations and Pakistan's Role
Diplomatic efforts remain in motion, with Pakistan serving as the primary mediator. Trump hinted at the possibility of visiting Islamabad to finalize the agreement. "I might go, yeah. If the deal is signed in Islamabad, I might go," he said.
US Vice President JD Vance previously led the initial round of negotiations in Pakistan, though those talks did not yield a final resolution. The US government indicated that further discussions may yet be held in the country.
The Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations expressed cautious optimism regarding the negotiation process and voiced hopes for a meaningful agreement.
Amid these high-stakes negotiations, Trump also announced a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, effective Thursday. This development comes just days after a separate ceasefire was established between the United States and Iran.
