TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that Iran was eager to make a deal with Washington. However, talks were put on hold when the official funeral procession for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei began in Iran.
As ANTARA reported, Trump made the remarks while attending the 250th anniversary celebrations of U.S. independence at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, known as America 250, while praising the military record of the superpower.
"We created the strongest and most powerful military. We won two world wars," he said, claiming that the Cold War had consigned America's rivals to the past.
Commenting on the recent tensions, Trump stated: "We beat Venezuela in one day, and we knocked the hell out of Iran; they're dying to settle. They want to settle so badly. We gave him a week off for a funeral because we're nice."
He also praised the milestone anniversary and argued that "at 250 years, America is the oldest republic on Earth. We are the freest people on Earth. We have the most righteous and enduring constitution on Earth."
"No one has ever given more to charity, ended more hunger, cured more disease, or done more to uplift humanity than Americans," he said.
Trump also warned of what he described as a re-emerging ideological threat at home. "There is now a resurgence of the communist menace in our land, including from newcomers to our country who embrace ideas totally opposed to our way of life and our great success," he said.
He added that communism was a mortal threat to American freedom, calling it the greatest threat to the country including World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor, and even 9/11. "America will never be a communist country," Trump said.
He then touched on domestic politics. "We can only lose the midterms if we allow ourselves to lose the midterms," he said.
He said that eliminating the filibuster rule and passing the "Save America Act" would ensure that the Republican Party would not lose an election for 100 years.
