TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jean-Pierre Lacroix, United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, has strongly condemned the deaths of Indonesian peacekeepers serving under United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), following a series of deadly incidents in southern Lebanon.
According to a press conference video received by Tempo, Lacroix confirmed that two Indonesian peacekeepers were killed on Monday morning, March 30, 2026, after an explosion struck a UNIFIL logistics convoy near Bani Hayyan in Sector East. The blast destroyed their vehicle and left two other peacekeepers injured, one of them seriously. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
The incident came just a day after another Indonesian peacekeeper was killed in a separate explosion inside a UNIFIL base in Ett Taibe, also in Sector East. One additional peacekeeper was critically wounded and evacuated to a hospital in Beirut.
Lacroix expressed condolences to the families of the victims and the government of Indonesia, while wishing a full recovery to those injured. He described the attacks as “unacceptable” and stressed that peacekeepers must never be targeted.
“UNIFIL is investigating these incidents to determine the circumstances,” he said, adding that recent aggressive acts against peacekeepers have raised serious concern.
He emphasized that all parties involved in the conflict must uphold international law and ensure the safety and security of UN personnel at all times. He also reiterated that United Nations installations must be respected and protected.
Despite the escalating risks, Lacroix noted that UNIFIL personnel remain on the ground, continuing their mandate under extremely dangerous conditions. He praised their “utmost courage and commitment” in maintaining international peace and security far from home.
Referring to UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which governs the ceasefire framework in Lebanon, Lacroix said multiple violations have occurred, including cross-border strikes and attacks on peacekeepers. He also pointed to the presence of Israeli forces in Lebanon as a violation of the resolution.
“There cannot be a military solution. There has to be a political solution,” he said, urging all sides to return to diplomatic efforts under the existing framework.
Lacroix added that the UN remains in close contact with Indonesia as a troop-contributing country, providing updates on the situation and support for the victims. He also confirmed ongoing coordination with relevant parties on the ground to reduce risks and maintain operational continuity.
