TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Having dominated HBO for eight seasons, Game of Thrones finally marked its expansion to theater releases. At CinemaCon on Tuesday night, Warner Bros. officially confirmed the franchise’s first-ever film title, Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest.
News of the project first surfaced last month, though early reports revealed only limited details about the plot.
According to Variety, Aegon’s Conquest will center on Daenerys Targaryen’s ancestor, Aegon I Targaryen, the legendary ruler who united the Seven Kingdoms.
The story draws from George R. R. Martin’s expansive A Song of Ice and Fire novels. Set around 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the film will explore how Aegon established his reign, famously forging the Iron Throne from the melted weapons of his defeated enemies.
Best known for his work on House of Cards and Andor, Beau Willimon is set to pen the screenplay of Aegon’s Conquest. While no official cast has been confirmed yet, dragons are all but certain to play a central role.
