TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), or KAI, canceled 34 train services on Monday, January 19, 2026, due to flooding caused by heavy rainfall and extreme weather conditions.
KAI Vice President for Corporate Communication Anne Purba said that between January 17 and January 19, around 38,000 passengers requested ticket refunds following the service disruptions.
“These adjustments are made to ensure that every train operation is truly safe for both passengers and staff,” Anne said in a written statement on Monday.
Anne explained that the disruptions were triggered by intense rainfall since Friday, January 16, which led to rivers overflowing and embankment failures along the Pekalongan–Sragi railway section in Central Java.
In the Greater Jakarta area, heavy rain also caused waterlogging at several railway facilities and along operational tracks.
KAI, she said, has implemented careful operational adjustments, prioritizing safety while closely monitoring weather conditions and infrastructure.
All decisions are based on on-site technical inspections and real-time assessments of track conditions.
In Operation Area (Daop) 4 Semarang, Anne said recovery work on the Pekalongan–Sragi section has shown progress. By around 05:10 AM, standing water on both the upstream and downstream tracks had been cleared, allowing trains to resume operations using their assigned locomotives.
“At this stage, a speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour remains in place while we wait for sufficient ballast consolidation using a Multi Tie Tamper (MTT),” Anne said. The machine is used to lift, align, and compact ballast stones to restore track geometry in line with safety standards.
Track recovery is being carried out through a combination of manual lifting and ballast replacement. Further work, including tamping with heavy equipment, is scheduled to continue if field conditions permit.
Meanwhile, in Operation Area (Daop) 1 Jakarta, waterlogging at the Kampung Bandan railway emplacement has been resolved.
Manual track lifting was carried out from Sunday evening into the night on both lines, followed by maintenance using a track inspection vehicle. The work was declared complete at around 04:30 AM.
“The first train passed at a speed limit of 20 kilometers per hour, with speeds gradually increased based on technical evaluations in the field,” Anne said.
KAI apologized to passengers for the inconvenience caused by the disruptions and confirmed that affected customers are entitled to service recovery measures, including a full 100 percent refund in accordance with company regulations.
