TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Dukono in North Halmahera, North Maluku, erupted again on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at approximately 3:42 p.m. Eastern Indonesian Time (WIT). During this latest activity, the volcano spewed a volcanic ash plume 2.5 kilometers high from its crater's summit.
Hanhan Handayani, an officer at the Dukono Volcano Observation Post (PGA), stated that the thick ash plume was directed toward the northeast and east. "At the time of writing, the eruption is still ongoing," Hanhan noted in her report to the Geological Agency shortly after the incident.
Seismogram recordings show that the earthquake generated by Mount Dukono's eruption had a maximum amplitude of 26 millimeters and lasted for approximately 27.76 seconds. Prior to this afternoon event, Mount Dukono had already erupted three times earlier the same day.
The first eruption occurred at 5:51 a.m. WIT, with an ash column observed reaching 900 meters above the summit. Another eruption followed at 9:57 a.m. WIT, sending volcanic ash plumes 700 meters high. At 11:59 a.m. WIT, the 1,335-meter-high mountain erupted once more, with the ash column again reaching 700 meters above the crater's summit.
The Geological Agency has maintained Mount Dukono's activity status at Level II, or Alert. Acting Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, urged local residents and climbers to refrain from all activities, including climbing or approaching the Malupang and Warirang craters, within a four-kilometer radius.
"We recommend that people around Mount Dukono always carry masks or nose and mouth coverings for use when needed to avoid the dangers of volcanic ash to the respiratory system," she said.
Mount Dukono is a stratovolcano, characterized by its cone-shaped structure and a compound crater complex. Its eruption type is classified as Strombolian-Vulcanian, which features continuous small to medium-sized explosive eruptions accompanied by the discharge of volcanic ash.
Mount Dukono is part of the Halmahera volcanic arc and has been actively erupting since 1933. This persistent volcanic activity is triggered by the movement of the Maluku Sea Plate. Other volcanoes formed by the confluence of the Eurasian, Pacific, and Indo-Australian tectonic plates include Mounts Tobaru, Ibu, Todoku-ranu, and Gamkonora.
