TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump said Wednesday it was a "great honor" to speak with his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro.

As reported by Anadolu Agency, the two leaders, who are at odds following the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, spoke by phone to discuss a range of issues, including drug trafficking and other disputes between their countries.

"I appreciated his call and tone, and look forward to meeting him in the near future," Trump wrote in Truth Social.

Trump said arrangements for the meeting were being coordinated between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Colombian Foreign Minister Rosa Villavicencio.

"The meeting is expected to take place at the White House in Washington, D.C.," he added.

The Colombian government confirmed the 35-minute call and described it as "a good and positive call."

Trump has warned other Latin American countries about possible US intervention in the days since the attack on Venezuela.

Colombia is one such country, with Trump on Sunday calling Petro a "sick man who likes making cocaine and selling it to the United States, and he’s not going to be doing it very long."

When asked by NewsNation's Libbey Dean and quoted by The Hill if he intended to launch a military operation in Colombia, Trump said, "That sounds good to me."

Trump has threatened Colombia and mocked Petro before. Last month, he said Petro "better watch his a."

After Saturday's attack, Petro called on Colombians to defend "national sovereignty" and warned against US intervention.

"If you bomb peasants, thousands of guerrillas will return to the mountains," Petro said, according to Bogotá's The City Paper. "And if you arrest the president whom a good part of my people want and respect, you will unleash the popular jaguar."

Petro deployed 30,000 Colombian troops along the country's border with Venezuela on Sunday.

Trump has also issued warnings to Mexico and Cuba, warning he would send the military to pursue cartel leaders in Mexico and declaring that the Cuban government was "ready to fall" without Venezuela.
