TEMPO.CO, Jakarta — A joint search and rescue team has recovered the body of one victim from the crash of an ATR 42-500 aircraft in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, on the third day of operations, Monday, January 19, 2026.
The victim was found in the Mount Bulusaraung area, a rugged mountainous region north of Makassar.
Head of Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), Air Marshal Mohammad Syafii, said the victim was female, although her identity has yet to be confirmed.
“The exact identity will be determined later through digital visual identification,” Syafii told reporters at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in South Sulawesi, as quoted by Antara.
Syafii said the body was located around 500 meters below the peak of Mount Bulusaraung, an area known for its steep and difficult terrain. Evacuation efforts are currently underway, he added.
With the latest discovery, a total of two victims have been found during the three-day search operation. The victims are believed to be one male and one female.
The ATR aircraft lost contact on January 17, 2026. It was carrying a crew of seven, consisting of Captain Andy Dahananto, co-pilot Farhan Gunawan, flight operation officer Hariadi, aircraft technicians Restu Adi P and Dwi Murdiono, and cabin crew members Florencia Lolita and Esther Aprilita.
The plane was also transporting three passengers, all employees of Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries who were on official duty. They were Ferry Irawan, a Ship Supervisor Analyst; Deden Mulyana, a State Assets Manager; and Yoga Noval, an Aerial Photo Operator.
Earlier, on January 18, the joint SAR team discovered debris believed to be from the Indonesia Air Transport aircraft.
The wreckage was found on the southern slope near the peak of Mount Bulusaraung, with the main body of the aircraft oriented toward the northern side of the mountain.
Basarnas said ground rescue teams are still working to reach the crash site, citing extremely rugged terrain and poor visibility caused by persistent fog, which continue to hamper evacuation efforts.
