TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Government has responded to reports of malfunctioning surveillance cameras (CCTV) around Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout during a student demonstration on Friday, June 12, 2026.
Marulina Dewi, Head of the Jakarta Department of Communication, Informatics, and Statistics, said that several CCTV units reported as non-functional in the area are not part of the government-managed system.
According to Marulina, some of the disrupted cameras belong to third-party digital platforms. However, she did not specify the identity of the operators.
“We emphasize that the platform is not an official channel or part of the CCTV system managed by the Jakarta Provincial Government,” she said in a written statement on Saturday, June 13, 2026.
She added that issues such as data availability, livestream interruptions, or access disruptions in third-party systems fall outside the authority of the provincial government. Meanwhile, she stressed that Jakarta’s official CCTV network remains fully operational.
“The operation of CCTV by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government continues to run normally to support security, public order, and area monitoring, including coordination with the police,” she said.
Earlier, social media user @corneliusvito on Threads claimed that CCTV cameras around HIRoundabout were completely down during the protest, writing: “In Central Jakarta, all CCTV is not working… Stay safe!”
The disruption occurred during a student protest titled “Toward Bankruptcy Indonesia”, organized by the University of Indonesia’s student executive body along with students from other universities. The demonstration took place around HI Roundabout after police redirected protesters who were initially heading toward the House of Representatives (DPR) building.
The students refused the directive and chose to rally at HI Roundabout, where they presented five demands to the government. These included cutting state budget waste, lowering prices of basic goods and fuel, halting the free nutritious meals program and village cooperative development project, ending militarization in civilian spaces, and urging President Prabowo to acknowledge government mistakes.
Jakarta Governor’s spokesperson, Chico Hakim, denied claims that CCTV systems at HI Roundabout were not functioning.
“The CCTV we manage totals ten units and they are operating normally,” he said on Friday, June 12, 2026.
He added that some cameras may appear inaccessible due to high traffic or technical delays. “If there are slow responses, it is because many users are accessing them,” he said.
Chico also noted that there are additional surveillance cameras around HI Roundabout that are not managed by the Jakarta government, but said their operational status could not be confirmed.
