TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian police have re-examined the crime scene at the boarding house of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs diplomat, Arya Daru Pangayunan, who was found dead. Daru, as he was familiarly called, is suspected to have died under suspicious circumstances, as his entire head was covered with duct tape.
The Central Jakarta Police, together with the Central Identification Unit at the Indonesian National Police Headquarters, conducted the crime scene investigation at Guest House Gondia, 22 Gondangdia Kecil Street, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
Deputy Chief of the Criminal Investigation Unit of Central Jakarta Police Commissioner Sigit Karyono said that the crime scene investigation was carried out to delve into the cause of Daru's death. "To further solidify the crime scene investigation, just now the Central Identification Unit team from the National Police Headquarters helped us to clarify the cause of the victim's death," he said to journalists at the scene.
During the crime scene investigation, Sigit stated that the National Police Headquarters' Central Identification Unit team only checked the belongings at the boarding house. "From the Headquarters, they only checked the belongings. What they are, we will later combine with the experts' statements," he said.
The inspection revealed that there were no missing documents or valuable belongings of Daru. The police secured two surveillance cameras or CCTVs at the boarding house. Sigit also confirmed that there is only one access card to Daru's boarding house, and there is no duplicate. "Only this one," he said.
According to Tempo's observation at the scene, the boarding house building is flanked by a vape shop or electronic cigarette store. To the right and left of the store are the entrances to the rooms at Guest House Gondia.
The entrance to room 105, which was occupied by Daru when he was alive, is equipped with iron grills and a sign that reads "PLEASE CLOSE THE DOOR". Next to the door, there is a bell and an access machine with a code and fingerprint recognition. Meanwhile, Daru's room at the boarding house appears to be sealed by the police.
In a basket in front of the vape shop, there is a package addressed to Arya Daru Pangayunan. The package was not claimed by its owner.
Sigit stated that the police have so far questioned five witnesses, namely the victim's wife, the victim's colleague, the boarding house keeper, and neighbors. The investigation of this case is still in the initial stages. "There are still many examinations that we will conduct. Expert examinations, perhaps forensic expert examinations, including the CCTVs," he said.
Arya Daru was found dead in room 105 at Gondangdia, Menteng, Central Jakarta. The victim's body was first discovered at around 8:00 AM on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
The Central Jakarta Police Chief, Commissioner General Susatyo Purnomo Condro, said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs diplomat's body was first discovered by local residents. "We received reports from residents regarding the discovery of a man who died in a boarding house room in the Gondangdia area," said Susatyo in his statement on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
Susatyo stated that the police team immediately went to the location and conducted a crime scene investigation. "Based on the initial examination, the victim was found in a deceased condition," said Susatyo.
When found, the victim's head was covered or entwined with duct tape. Meanwhile, his entire body was covered with a blanket on the bed. "The victim was lying on the bed with his head covered with duct tape and his body covered with a blanket," said Susatyo.
The Police Chief revealed that the victim's body has been evacuated to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM). The police will soon conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of the victim's death.
