TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Australia is committed to deepening its relationship with Indonesia in the field of education through the Transnational Education (TNE) Connect program.
"TNE Connect is built on the strong relationships that have been established with three Australian universities that have operated branch campuses in Indonesia and more than 25,000 Indonesian citizens who pursued education in Australia last year," said Charge d'Affaires Gita Kamath in a press statement issued by the Australian Embassy on Monday, May 25, 2026.
According to Australia's Business Champion for Indonesia, Professor Jennifer Westacott, strengthening cooperation in the field of transnational education is crucial to increase access to high-quality education for students from Australia and Indonesia. It is also important to support investment in human resources and productivity in both countries.
"The rapidly changing world, such as the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) or the digitalization process of everything, presents an opportunity for both countries to collaborate in addressing various emerging issues," she said at the TNE Connect symposium at the Westin hotel in Jakarta on Monday, May 25, 2026.
In addition, Westeacott stated that through transnational education, the education sector in Indonesia can have a great opportunity to explore technology, including the utilization of technology and AI, which will not only transform the face of education but also the methods of teaching and learning. "The benefits obtained are not only in the education sector but will also have an impact on preparing human resources in various industries, from health, mining, to social sectors," said Westeacott.
The Expert Staff of the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of Indonesia, Hermawan Kresno Dipojono, stated that transnational education is crucial, especially to achieve productivity from each university in order to obtain much better quality education. This is highly needed in the current higher education landscape, especially cooperation in research between universities in Indonesia and Australia.
"The expected results, especially, are the influence of the research results conducted by universities on the interests of the global community, including in terms of the publication of research that has such an influence," said Hermawan.
Based on the definition provided by the European Association for International Education (EAIE), Transnational Education (TNE) is a scheme for delivering academic provision such as study programs, curricula, or educational services by an institution in one country to students in another country, where the students do not have to go to the institution's home country.
More than 30 higher education institutions from Australia and Indonesia attended TNE Connect. Participants listened to presentations from officials of the Australian and Indonesian governments, as well as other universities, on how to build stronger TNE partnerships.
During the two-day summit, discussions explored how TNE can foster broader academic and research collaborations, as well as support graduate employment opportunities and industry needs.
