Poll: 60% of Americans Oppose U.S. Involvement in Iran-Israel Conflict

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A recent poll conducted by YouGov and The Economist found that 60 percent of Americans oppose their country's involvement in the conflict between Israel and Iran, according to a report by Antara on Tuesday.

Only 16 percent of respondents supported U.S. military involvement, while 24 percent said they were unsure or did not have a clear opinion.

When broken down by political affiliation, 53 percent of Republicans, 65 percent of Democrats, and 61 percent of Independents opposed military intervention in Iran, as reported by YouGov.

Among Republicans, just 23 percent believed the U.S. should be involved in the conflict between Iran and Israel.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican member of Congress from Georgia who opposes U.S. involvement in Iran, told Newsweek on Tuesday that the poll results were “not surprising.”

On the diplomatic front, 56 percent of respondents supported U.S. involvement in negotiations with Iran regarding its nuclear program. Meanwhile, 18 percent opposed it.

The poll also indicated that only 24 percent of Americans viewed Iran's nuclear program as a "direct and serious threat to the U.S."

When asked what approach should be taken to persuade Iran to limit its nuclear activities, just 18 percent favored the option of threatening military action.

In addition, 41 percent of respondents said they disapproved of Donald Trump's handling of Iran. Regarding his stance on Israel, 44 percent expressed disapproval.

The poll was conducted from June 13 to 16 and surveyed over 1,500 people across the United States.

Public concern over U.S. involvement in the conflict has grown following Israel’s attack on Iran last week. These concerns deepened after reports that former President Donald Trump called his national security team to a meeting in the White House Situation Room shortly after leaving the G7 summit in Canada on Monday night.

On Tuesday, Axios reported that Trump is seriously considering the possibility of U.S. military involvement in the Middle East conflict. This includes a potential strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, specifically the underground uranium enrichment site in Fordow.

Israel had previously urged the United States to directly join in striking Iran.

However, in testimony delivered in March, CIA Director Tulsi Gabbard stated that Iran does not possess nuclear weapons.

She said the intelligence community had assessed that “Iran is not building nuclear weapons, and Supreme Leader [Ayatollah Ali] Khamenei has not sanctioned a nuclear weapons program since suspending it in 2003.”

Trump challenged Gabbard’s statement on Tuesday. Nonetheless, disputing her remarks and the intelligence assessment could prove politically complicated.

Much of the skepticism stems from the legacy of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. In the early 2000s, the Bush administration faced backlash for exaggerating the threat posed by Iraq, which ultimately led to a widely unpopular military intervention.
