TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated 1,061 Red-and-White Village Cooperatives (Kopdes) on Saturday, May 16, 2026. The thousands of Red-and-White Village Cooperatives inaugurated by Prabowo are scattered throughout Central and East Java. The inauguration took place in Nganjuk, East Java.
Prabowo considered the establishment of the Red-and-White Village Cooperatives an important event. The Gerindra Party chair stated that the program is one of the most significant economic milestones of his government. "This is a historic milestone," said Prabowo as reported by the Presidential Secretariat.
According to him, Red-and-White Village Cooperatives will make villages more economically independent. The former minister of defense stated that each cooperative unit can absorb the village's production and be a distributor to other areas. The cooperatives will also distribute subsidized products to the rural communities.
Prabowo mentioned that Red-and-White Village Cooperatives also has various tools and facilities that can be used for the benefit of the villages. "In physical terms, the building is there, the warehouse is there, the system is there, the goods are there, the officers are there, the logistical elements are there, there are trucks, there are pickups, there are three-wheeled vehicles," he said.
The president stated that village cooperatives will also serve as centers for financial services, providing rural communities with access to affordable credit. He hopes that this step will further strengthen economic growth and drive village-based industrialization throughout Indonesia.
On the same occasion, Coordinating Minister for the Food Zulkifli Hasan conveyed that 9,294 cooperative physical buildings have been completed as of today.
Meanwhile, 1,061 cooperatives in East Java and Central Java are ready to begin operating fully. "In East Java, 530 cooperative units have been established in 7 regencies, while in Central Java there are 531 units in 8 regencies or cities," said Zulkifli.
In February, Ferry Juliantono, the Minister of Cooperatives, stated that 1,000 units of the 80,000-unit Red-and-White Village Cooperatives construction project had been completed.
As of February 2026, Ferry mentioned that the number of Red-and-White Village Cooperatives under construction has almost reached 20,000, with an average physical progress of 20 percent.
"The assumption is that if it's currently 20 percent, by May it will be 100 percent built (20,000 units)," he said in a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, reported by Antara.
He emphasized that thorough preparation is required for the construction of Red-and-White Village Cooperatives so that they can operate optimally.
