TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - China's Foreign Ministry confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit Beijing, days after U.S. President Donald Trump met with President Xi Jinping.
China’s Foreign Ministry announced on Saturday that Putin will pay a state visit to the country on May 19–20, 2026, at the invitation of President Xi, according to a statement published on the ministry’s website, as quoted by ANTARA.
The visit comes just four days after Trump's official visit to Beijing on May 13-15, 2026.
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Friday that China and Russia are maintaining close communication over preparations for the meeting between Presidents Xi and Putin, adding that further details will be announced in due course.
The last face-to-face meeting between Putin and Xi was at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Tianjin on August 31-September 1, 2025. In addition, Xi and Putin also communicated via video link on February 4, 2026.
Earlier on Thursday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Putin would soon visit China. He said the visit is currently in its final stage of preparation and that an official announcement will be made soon, adding that only minor finishing touches remain before it takes place.
When asked about the possibility of Russia-China contacts after the U.S. leader's visit, Peskov said the Russian leadership still expects communication with Xi regardless of Trump's visit to Beijing.
On Thursday, May 9, Putin said that Russia and China's interaction was the most important factor in stabilizing international relations. Speaking at a press conference, Putin described cooperation between countries like China and Russia as a "clear factor of deterrence and stability" in global affairs.
He said that China is Russia's largest trade and economic partner, adding that bilateral trade diversification continues through high-tech industries, which is very important. Putin also said that Russia and China had reached a high level of agreement to "take a serious step forward" in oil and gas cooperation.
Should Putin visit, China would become the first country to host all four leaders of the other permanent members of the UN Security Council within a few months. The UN Security Council has five permanent members, namely Russia, the US, the UK, France, and China.
French President Emmanuel Macron will visit China in December 2025, while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will visit in January 2026.
