TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto has summoned Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia to the Presidential Palace in Jakarta to discuss developments in the energy sector and downstreaming efforts, following ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting global energy markets.
After the meeting on Thursday evening, June 11, 2026, Bahlil said the discussion also covered the government's push to strengthen energy resilience amid uncertain global conditions.
“The President instructed us to immediately look for alternative energy sources, given the ongoing geopolitical developments,” Bahlil told reporters at the Presidential Palace.
He said the government is prioritizing several measures, including accelerating the transition from liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to compressed natural gas (CNG), restructuring mining governance, and ensuring the readiness of the state electricity company PLN as well as national fuel supplies.
Separately, Deputy Foreign Minister Arif Havas Oegroseno said Indonesia is also exploring alternative oil supply sources in Africa to mitigate risks from global energy disruptions linked to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
“We are working closely with Algeria, Nigeria, Angola, and several other African countries,” Havas said after a working meeting with House of Representatives Commission I at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta, as quoted by Antara.
He said Indonesia is seeking oil imports from regions that do not require passage through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been affected by renewed tensions between the United States and Iran.
According to Havas, this makes several African countries a viable alternative source of energy supply for Indonesia.
In addition to Africa, Indonesia is also considering potential energy cooperation with oil- and gas-producing countries in Latin America.
“We are identifying countries in Latin America with oil and gas potential. Almost all of them have resources that can be explored,” he said.
