TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Typically, people are encouraged to eat three meals a day, with portions tailored to their individual needs. But what happens when the body goes without food for 24 hours?

In the first six hours without eating, the body focuses on digesting the most recent meal. After that, it begins to rely on stored glucose to supply energy.

According to Healthline, this process is beneficial for managing someone's cholesterol and glucose levels. Metabolic changes occur due to the lack of glucose intake into the body, thus the stored glucose is entirely used.

In addition, not eating can promote weight loss. Regulating food intake supports this process, as the body starts to burn stored fat for energy after about 12 hours without food. This fat is then converted into energy to keep the body functioning.

This metabolic process is called ketosis. During ketosis, fat is transformed into ketones, which serve as an alternative energy source for both the body and brain. Ketosis typically occurs when carbohydrate intake remains very low.

Going without food for a full day, commonly referred to as fasting, is often practiced by individuals following a diet. One method, known as intermittent fasting, involves consuming only water during the fasting period.

This approach has shown effectiveness in supporting weight loss, although results may vary between individuals. Additionally, this type of diet may lower the risk of cardiovascular issues such as heart disease.

As cited by Medical News Today, problems related to fat buildup in the blood or excess body weight can be improved through this diet. For people with type 2 diabetes, intermittent fasting may also be an option, provided it is done under medical supervision or with guidance from a nutritionist.
