TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Yogyakarta Chinese Cultural Week (PBTY) 2026 is set to offer a different atmosphere compared to previous years. The annual event, which centers its Chinese New Year festivities in the Ketandan area of Jalan Malioboro, is planned to serve as a ngabuburit (waiting for breaking of the fast) destination for the public, as its schedule coincides with the holy month of Ramadan 1447 Hijri.
The plan emerged after the PBTY 2026 committee held a meeting with Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X at the Kepatihan Complex in Yogyakarta on Monday, January 19, 2026.
Chairperson of the PBTY 2026 Committee Jimmy Sutanto explained that the event will run for seven full days, from February 25 to March 3, 2026. "As in previous years, PBTY 2026 will be held for a full seven days in Ketandan," he said.
According to him, the main focus of this year's event is to involve all elements of society and cultural arts to foster a sense of togetherness. "In this activity, the most important thing for us is how we can encompass all elements of society and cultural arts to promote togetherness," said Jimmy.
In addition to maintaining the tradition of a main stage showcasing various cultural arts, the committee is adjusting the layout by planning to locate the stage around Suryatmajan Street, the northern entrance to Ketandan Village. Jimmy added that the technical details of the location will be further discussed to align with current field conditions.
Tolerance for Those Fasting
Meanwhile, the Deputy Chairperson of the PBTY 2026 Executive Committee, Subekti Saputro Wijaya, revealed that the committee is currently conceptualizing cultural booths and stages to serve as comfortable spots for the public to wait for the breaking of the fast.
This initiative serves as a gesture of tolerance and support for those observing Ramadan. "We will design activities, stages, and booths to provide activities for the public while they are fasting," he said.
The committee also plans to provide iftar (fast-breaking) meals for the public at several locations.
This year, the Yogyakarta Chinese Cultural Week carries the theme "Cultural Heritage Strengthens National Unity," reflecting Yogyakarta’s identity as a tolerant city. Subekti emphasized that cultural heritage from any origin must be preserved to strengthen unity. As the peak of the festivities, the committee has scheduled the Malioboro Imlek Carnival for Saturday, February 28, 2026.
