German, Canada Call on Iran to Continue Cooperation with IAEA on Nuclear Programs

7 hours ago 11

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called on Iran to continue its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to prevent a new escalation in its conflict with Israel.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Berlin with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, Wadephul emphasized that Iran must clearly show to the world that they are not developing nuclear weapons.

"The Iranian parliament's decision to suspend cooperation with the IAEA is a completely wrong signal. I call on the Iranian government to reverse this path," Wadephul said on Thursday, June 26, 2025, quoted from Anadolu.

Wadephul stressed that the current opportunity with the ceasefire must be effectively utilized to find a diplomatic solution.

“It's a great relief that the ceasefire between Iran and Israel is holding. Because only with a ceasefire we can now embark on the path to diplomacy," he said.

“The leadership in Tehran must finally state, clearly and transparently, that Iran is not seeking a nuclear weapon. This is the common position of the E3 (Germany, France, the UK) and the United States."

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand echoed the comments of her German counterpart. Anand called on Iran to take steps to address international concerns about its nuclear program.

“While we think about the next steps between Iran and Israel, we have to make sure that there is a return to the negotiating table somehow," Anand said.

According to Nournews, the Iranian parliament passed a bill to suspend cooperation with the UN's nuclear watchdog last Wednesday. The law, which still requires approval from the Guardian Council, would make future inspections by the IAEA subject to authorization by Iran's Supreme National Security Council.

Earlier, Israel launched airstrikes on several locations in Iran on June 13, including military and nuclear facilities. Israel claimed that Tehran was close to producing a nuclear bomb.

In response, Iran launched missile and drone attacks as retaliation. The United States also joined the conflict by bombing three Iranian nuclear sites last Sunday.

After 12 days of aerial combat between the two regional arch-enemies, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday a ceasefire between Israel and Iran to end their conflict.

IAEA: Iran's Nuclear Program Suffers Major Damage

Meanwhile, the Director General of the UN nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, stated that Iran's nuclear program has suffered major damage after recent U.S. and Israeli attacks. "The attacks that began on 13 June caused major physical destruction at three sites—Natanz, Isfahan and Fordow. Iran had focused most of its uranium enrichment and conversion activities at those places," Grossi said, as quoted by Antara.

Emphasizing that there are other nuclear facilities that were not affected, he described the existing damage as very significant.

Grossi also mentioned that the centrifuges at the Fordow nuclear facility are no longer operational. "We can’t fully assess, and no one can say exactly what the extent of the damage is. But we already know that, given the power of those weapons and the technical characteristics of a centrifuge, we know that these centrifuges are no longer operational," he said.

When asked about Iran's decision to stop cooperating with the IAEA, Grossi expressed great concern, and emphasized that Iran cannot unilaterally suspend their cooperation.

"The agency’s presence in Iran is not some act of generosity. It’s an international responsibility. Iran is a signatory of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and as such, must be subject to an inspection system," he said.

He further emphasized that there will be consequences if Iran refuses to provide access to inspectors. "It is possible that dialogue will resume, that inspections will resume," he said.
