Indonesia to Evaluate Mount Rinjani Hiking System Following Incidents

6 hours ago 11

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government will evaluate the hiking system at Mount Rinjani in a bid to prevent recurring incidents. The plan surfaced following the death of a Brazilian climber, Juliana Marins, who fell into a ravine on Saturday, June 21. Her body was recovered on Tuesday, June 24.

West Nusa Tenggara Vice Governor Indah Dhamayanti said the government will make improvements from the regulatory side related to the existing climbing process for domestic and foreign tourists.

According to her, the step is necessary to ensure an elevated status of "world destination" for Mount Rinjani. The local government will also establish regulations to reduce the risk of climbers experiencing accidents, coordinating with relevant parties.

"We will minimize the risk of accidents," said Indah in a press conference together with regional policymakers after viewing Juliana's body at Mataram Hospital on Thursday, June 26, 2025.

Evacuation Hindered by Weather

The evacuation process for the Brazilian climber took two days after the fallen climber's location was pinpointed. According to Indah, this was not due to lack of preparedness, but due to bad weather.

"Please help correct any possibly incorrect news, because as we all know, the team immediately moved to the location, but it was hindered due to the weather and the changing geographical terrain of Mount Rinjani," she said.

From the first notice, she said, NTB Governor Lalu Muhamad Iqbal had requested support from a helicopter owned by PT Amman Mineral for the evacuation. "But, as mentioned, the weather was challenging, and Brimob co-led the evacuation with Basarnas. It was a struggle for all parties, and the family was very understanding after seeing the weather in Sembalun," she said.

After Juliana fell into a ravine on Mount Rinjani, rescuers conducted search until her body was found on Tuesday. The joint SAR team successfully evacuated Juliana's body, ultimately deciding against using a helicopter due to extreme weather conditions. From the Pelawangan post, Juliana's body was carried to the Mount Rinjani National Park Office (BTNGR) located near the climbing trail entrance.
