TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Director Kamila Andini has been selected as a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), allowing her to vote in the Academy Awards.
This recognition makes her one of the contributors responsible for selecting films that will compete for the Oscars. The Academy is an international honorary organization made up of professionals in the film industry, including directors, actors, writers, producers, technicians, and other artists.
The announcement was shared by Forka Films, the production house led by her husband, director and producer Ifa Isfansyah, through a press release received by Tempo on Friday, June 27, 2025.
"Becoming a part of the Academy is not just a personal achievement, but also an important step to bring our Indonesian women's stories to the global stage," said Kamila Andini.
Kamila Andini is known for directing acclaimed films such as Yuni, Nana (Before Now and Then), and Gadis Kretek. She is the first female feature film director from Indonesia to be selected as an Academy member this year, joining a list of prominent names that includes Ariana Grande, Jason Momoa, and Kieran Culkin.
"Kamila Andini's selection as an Academy member is a significant achievement, not only for herself, but also for Indonesian and Southeast Asian cinema," said Ifa Isfansyah. "We believe that her involvement in the Oscars will bring a new perspective from Asia into the film landscape."
Ifa noted that Kamila, the main creative partner at Forka Films, has been instrumental in developing cinematic stories rooted in Indonesian culture with a universal appeal.
Her work often focuses on themes involving women, indigenous communities, and youth, presented with emotional depth and distinct visual style.
