TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 200 percent tariffs on French products if President Emmanuel Macron declines his invitation to join the Gaza Peace Council.
In a press conference after attending a college sports competition in Miami, Florida, on Monday, as reported by Anadolu Agency, Trump initially dismissed the alleged remarks from Macron.
"Did he say that?" Trump asked when asked for his response to reports that Macron had declined to join the US-sponsored body.
"Well, nobody wants him because he's going to be out of office very soon," he said.
Trump then said that if the reports were true, he might "put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes," and Macron "will join."
He emphasized that this would only happen if Macron actually refuses to join the Gaza Peace Council. "But he doesn't have to join," he said.
A report by French television station BFM revealed that, according to sources, President Macron plans to decline Trump's offer to join the Gaza Peace Council.
Macron reportedly expressed concern that the body would branch out beyond Gaza and undermine the foundations and structure of the United Nations (UN).
The White House announced in a statement on Friday the formation of a Peace Council to play a crucial role in implementing Trump's 20-point plan to permanently end Israel's war on Gaza and rebuild the territory.
The council is also said to provide strategic oversight, mobilize international resources, and ensure accountability as Gaza transitions from conflict to peace and development.
The United States also established a National Committee for the Administration of Gaza to implement the second phase of Trump's Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict, a founding Executive Council, and a Gaza Executive Council to support the transition framework.
Trump also invited other heads of state and government to join the Gaza council, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Greenland
Trump later shared a screenshot of a message he received from Macron questioning his attempt to take over Greenland and invited him to dinner in Paris on Thursday.
"My friend, We are totally in line on Syria. We can do great things on Iran. I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland," Macron wrote to Trump, according to a screenshot posted on the American leader's Truth Social account with the caption: "Note from President Emmanuel Macron, of France:."
"Let us try to build great things," Macron wrote, also offering to convene a G7 meeting in Paris on Thursday afternoon. "I can invite the ukrainians, the danish, the syrians and the russians in the margins," he said.
