Nadiem Makarim's Former Aide Misses Chromebook Corruption Probe, Reportedly Abroad

5 hours ago 7

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jurist Tan, a former special staff member to Minister of Education and Culture Nadiem Makarim, is currently overseas and unable to comply with a summons for questioning.

This was confirmed by the Head of the Legal Information Center at the Attorney General’s Office, Harli Siregar. “The person in question, if I'm not mistaken, is not in Indonesia,” Harli said on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

Harli did not specify Jurist's exact location abroad, though it is known that Jurist, along with fellow special staff Fiona Handayani and former consultant Ibrahim Arif, has been subject to a travel ban since June 4, 2025.

Jurist had been scheduled to appear as a witness on June 17 in the corruption investigation involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops by the Ministry of Education and Culture during the 2019-2022 period.

The June 17 summons was a rescheduled date following an earlier postponement. Jurist has been summoned three times (on June 3, 11, and 17) but has failed to appear on each occasion.

Harli said Jurist communicated through his legal counsel that he was unable to attend due to family reasons.

“The person in question, through his legal representative, wishes that the investigators consider conducting the questioning online or have the investigator question him in a place chosen by the person in question,” said Harli.

According to Harli, investigators are still reviewing and evaluating the request. As for the possibility of using force, he said it cannot be carried out immediately due to differences in legal jurisdictions. Although Jurist has submitted written statements, investigators are still hoping for an in-person appearance.

The alleged corruption in the Chromebook procurement remains under general investigation, with no suspects formally named.

The Attorney General’s Office suspects collusion in the procurement of Chromebook laptops, despite concerns raised during earlier trials indicating that the devices may not be compatible with Indonesia’s internet infrastructure.

The trial was conducted between 2018 and 2019 with 1,000 Chromebook units and resulted in a recommendation to procure Windows-based laptops instead.

However, under the Ministry’s subsequent leadership, Rp9.9 trillion was allocated for Chromebook purchases, including Rp6.3 trillion from special allocation funds.

The laptop trials took place under former Minister Muhadjir Effendy, while the procurement itself occurred during Nadiem Makarim’s tenure.

Nadiem has previously clarified that the trial during Muhadjir’s term was aimed at remote, frontier, and outermost (3T) areas, whereas the procurement under his leadership targeted regions with reliable internet connectivity.
