Saudi Airlines Resumes Jakarta-Bound Flight Following Fake Bomb Threat

5 hours ago 12

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - After undergoing inspection and being confirmed safe from a bomb threat, Saudi Airlines Flight SV 5276 resumed its flight to Soekarno-Hatta Airport on Wednesday morning, June 18, after diverting to Kualanamu Airport yesterday.

The plane carrying 442 pilgrims from pilgrimage group 12 JKS from Jeddah is scheduled to land at Soekarno-Hatta Airport around 10 a.m. "Thus far, the Information about the plane departing from Kualanamu is still changing, but the latest information indicates it is scheduled to arrive at 10 in the morning," said Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police Chief Commissioner Ronald Sipayung when contacted by Tempo.

According to Ronald, the Soekarno-Hatta Airport will be handled the same as other arrivals, with no special treatment. "Because the authorities at Kualanamu Airport have confirmed the plane is safe and was greenlit to fly to Soekarno-Hatta Airport," he said.

Director General of Air Transportation Lukman F. Laisa, in a written statement on Tuesday, June 17, said the bomb threat was sent by an unidentified person via electronic mail on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. local time.

"The email contained a threat from an unknown person to detonate the Saudia Airlines SV 5276 aircraft," he said.

In response, Soekarno-Hatta Airport activated its Emergency Operation Center (EOC), the airport’s command hub for managing emergencies. Members of the airport’s Security Committee were also summoned to the EOC to coordinate necessary actions regarding the threat.

At 10:17 AM WIB, the flight’s pilot decided to divert the aircraft to Kualanamu Airport in North Sumatra as a precaution. Kualanamu Airport, in turn, coordinated with the Airport Authority Region II, activated its EOC, and mobilized its Security Committee to respond to the situation.

"The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (Jihandak) team from the Police is on standby at Kualanamu Airport to handle security measures in accordance with the regulations," Lukman said.

By around 10:55 AM WIB, the plane had safely landed at Kualanamu and was directed to an isolated parking area.

"Kualanamu Airport has evacuated the pilgrim passengers, and the Jihandak team is conducting a sweep for the presence of bombs on the aircraft," Lukman said.
