1. Facts About the ATR 42-500 Aircraft Crash

An ATR 42-500 aircraft belonging to Indonesia Air Transport reportedly lost contact en route from Yogyakarta to Makassar on Saturday, January 17, 2026. A total of 10 people were on board the ATR aircraft, consisting of seven crew members and three passengers.

A joint search and rescue (SAR) team conducted a search and rescue (SAR) operation, suspecting a plane crash. On Sunday morning, January 18, 2026, the aircraft wreckage was found by the SAR team on the slopes of Bulusaraung Peak, South Sulawesi. The location of the crash was on the southern slope of the peak, with the fuselage positioned north of Mount Bulusaraung Peak.

The cause of the crash is still unknown. The SAR team is currently recovering the wreckage and victims.

2. Floods Hit 16 Neighborhood Units and 10 Roads in Jakarta

Heavy rains that poured down on Jakarta, Indonesia, on Sunday, January 18, 2026, caused flooding in several areas. The Head of the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Data and Information Center, Mohamad Yohan, stated that as of 7:00 AM Western Indonesian Time (WIB), 16 neighborhood units (RTs) and 10 roads were affected.

In North Jakarta, for example, two neighborhood units (RTs) experienced flooding, with water reaching 30 centimeters in Ancol Village and 30 centimeters in West Pademangan Village.

"Heavy rains caused several areas of flooding in Jakarta," Yohan said on Sunday, January 18, 2026.

West Jakarta was the most affected area, with 13 RTs inundated. In Kedaung Kali Angke Village, eight RTs were inundated with water reaching 45–60 cm. Four RTs in Tegal Alur Village experienced 30–40 cm of water, while one RT in Jelambar Village experienced 25 cm of water

3. Indonesia's Purbaya Confident Rupiah Will Regain Strength Over Time

 Indonesia’s Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa expressed confidence that the rupiah will regain strength over time, despite its recent decline against the US dollar.

“So we just have to wait for the rupiah to strengthen,” Purbaya said at the House of Representatives (DPR) Complex in Jakarta on Monday, January 19, 2026.

The remarks came after the rupiah weakened by 68 points in Monday’s trading session, closing at Rp 16,955 per US dollar, down from Rp 16,896.

Ibrahim Assuaibi, Director of PT Traze Andalan Futures, forecast that the rupiah will likely fluctuate between Rp 16,950 and Rp 16,980 per US dollar in Tuesday’s trading on January 20, 2026.

Purbaya emphasized that the currency’s movement reflects underlying economic fundamentals. He also noted that Indonesia’s Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) reached a record high of 9,133.87 in Monday’s afternoon session.
