TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - On the social media platform Truth Social, US President Donald Trump on Tuesday posted an image showing himself planting a US flag in Greenland.

In the image, reported by Xinhua and cited by Antara, Trump is accompanied by US Vice President J.D. Vance and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with a sign nearby that reads "GREENLAND - US TERRITORY EST. 2026."

That same day, Trump released another image, showing himself meeting with European leaders in the Oval Office, with a map displayed behind him, showing the US, Canada, Greenland, and Venezuela under an American flag.

On Truth Social that same Tuesday, Trump said he had spoken by phone with Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary General, about Greenland.

"As I expressed to everyone, very plainly, Greenland is imperative for National and World Security. There can be no going back -- On that, everyone agrees!" he wrote.

One of Trump's final focuses in his second year in office has been to annex Greenland, the world's largest island in the Arctic, currently controlled by Denmark.

When asked how far he would go to take Greenland, the 79-year-old Republican told reporters, "You'll find out." He has linked his pursuit of Greenland to his failure to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Trump has vowed to gradually increase tariffs on European countries that oppose his move to acquire Greenland, escalating the dispute over the semi-autonomous Danish territory he has long coveted.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Saturday, Trump wrote that he has subsidized Denmark and other European Union countries by not imposing tariffs on them.

"Now, after Centuries, it is time for Denmark to give back — World Peace is at stake! China and Russia want Greenland, and there is not a thing that Denmark can do about it."

Trump added, "the National Security of the United States, and the World at large, is at stake."

He wrote that starting February 1, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland will be subject to a 10 percent tariff on their exports to the United States.

On June 1, the tariff will increase to 25 percent, he said. “This Tariff will be due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland,” Trump wrote.

The United States has been trying to do this transaction for over 150 years. Many Presidents have tried, and for good reason, but Denmark has always refused.
