TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States (US) Embassy in Israel will be closed from Wednesday, June 18, 2025, until Friday, June 20, 2025, "due to security concerns," according to the US Department of State on Tuesday as reported by Anadolu.
"This includes the Consular Section in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv," the ministry wrote on the platform X.
The US Embassy also urged government employees and their families to remain at or near their residences "until further notice."
Tensions in the Middle East have been escalating since last Friday, when Israel launched an airstrike on several locations in Iran, including civilian apartments as well as their military and nuclear facilities, which Iran later retaliated.
The US Embassy in Tel Aviv suffered "minor damage" after an Iranian missile landed near the building early Monday, said the US ambassador to Israel as reported by Newsweek.
Ambassador Mike Huckabee wrote on X, previously known as Twitter, that no US personnel were injured in the incident. However, he said the Embassy and US consulate would remain closed on Monday.
During his first term in office, President Donald Trump opened the US Embassy in Jerusalem and recognized the city, fiercely contested and divided with Palestine, as the capital of Israel. The Tel Aviv branch continued to operate.
Israel and Iran have been exchanging attacks for the fourth day until Monday after Israel launched a "preemptive" strike on Iran's nuclear, missile, and military sites on Thursday night US time.
An Iranian official said 78 people died and over 300 were injured in Tehran while Israel declared a state of emergency and prepared for Iran's response on Tuesday.
Tehran has carried out several waves of retaliation with drones and missiles in Israel, while the Israeli military continues to target sites in Iran.
The US Department of State on Saturday said certain non-emergency US government personnel and their family members could leave the country, while others should take shelter until further notice.
The Jerusalem and Tel Aviv offices will remain open, the Department of State said at the time.
The US has been withdrawing some of its staff from the broader Middle East, including the embassy in Iraq, ahead of Israel's initial strikes late last weekend.
