TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Trade Minister Budi Santoso said Indonesia is among the countries subject to a 10 percent U.S. import tariff, although the measure will remain in effect for only 150 days.
“The U.S. government has imposed a 10 percent tariff on all countries for 150 days,” Budi said at the Ministry of Trade in Jakarta on Monday, June 8, 2026.
According to Budi, the tariff was introduced after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the reciprocal tariffs initiated by President Donald Trump. The current tariff stems from a policy adopted by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR).
He said the USTR launched a Section 301 investigation on March 11, 2026, under the U.S. Trade Act of 1974. The investigation examined around 60 countries over issues related to forced labor and manufacturing market access.
On June 2, 2026, the USTR released the findings, which became the basis for imposing tariffs of either 10 percent or 12.5 percent.
Indonesia was among the countries assigned the lower 10 percent rate, while 46 other countries were subject to a 12.5 percent tariff.
Budi said Indonesia qualified for the lower tariff partly because it has regulations prohibiting forced labor and does not import goods produced through such practices. Existing trade arrangements between Indonesia and the United States were also taken into consideration.
The tariff will remain in place for 150 days, until July 24, 2026, after which Washington is expected to announce a new tariff policy.
Indonesia is continuing discussions with U.S. authorities and hopes to secure lower tariffs, including a zero-percent rate for certain export commodities.
“The situation remains dynamic, and the Indonesian government continues to engage with the United States in pursuit of more favorable tariff rates,” Budi said.
The United States was Indonesia’s 11th-largest export destination in 2025. Indonesia recorded a trade surplus of US$18.11 billion with the U.S. last year, with exports totaling approximately US$30.6 billion.
“Even during the reciprocal tariff discussions, our exports to the United States continued to increase,” he added.
