Shin Tae-yong's Vision for Persija Jakarta's Future

7 hours ago 23

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The newly appointed coach of Persija Jakarta, Shin Tae-yong, has declared his readiness to fulfill the management's championship mandate after officially taking the helm of the Macan Kemayoran for the next three seasons. The capital football club hopes that the arrival of the South Korean tactician will end their title drought, which dates back to 2018.

Last season, Persija fell short of their championship ambitions, finishing third in the 2025/2026 Super League standings behind champions Persib Bandung and runners-up Borneo FC. Addressing these high expectations, STY emphasized his commitment to steering Persija toward silverware while delivering an entertaining brand of football for the club's loyal supporters.

"My target is definitely to achieve good performance, and I will make every effort to ensure that the Persija Jakarta fans truly look forward to watching Persija's games again," Shin said during his introductory press conference at the Jakarta International Stadium in North Jakarta on Monday, June 8, 2026.

According to him, securing the best possible results can only be accomplished through deep synergy between the coaching staff and the players. "By becoming one with the players, it is possible for us to claim the top spot in Indonesia," he added, as quoted by news agency Antara.

Shin revealed that his five-year tenure managing the Indonesian national team was one of the reasons behind his decision to accept Persija’s offer. Over that period, he became well-acquainted with the footballing culture in Jakarta and the major venues that served as the national team's home ground.

"I had coached the Indonesian national team for five years, so I am very familiar with the stadiums in Jakarta: Gelora Bung Karno and the Jakarta International Stadium, so Persija feels like the most familiar fit for me," the 57-year-old coach remarked.

He also acknowledged Persija’s stature as one of the biggest Indonesian football clubs. While recognizing the fierce competition within the domestic league, Shin admitted he was drawn to the specific project presented by the club's board.

"There are indeed many good teams in the Indonesian Super League, such as Persib, Persija, Borneo, and Bali United, but after meeting with the Persija executives, I felt compelled to take on this challenge; not just for trophies and system, but to further develop the progress of Indonesian football," he stated.

Persija Optimistic About Swift Adaptation

At the same event, Persija President Mohamad Prapanca expressed immense confidence that Shin will successfully meet the targets set before him, given the fact that several of Persija's core players have already spent years working under Shin during their duties with the Garuda squad.

Among those who were part of Shin's national squad are club captain Rizky Ridho, Shayne Pattynama, Dony Tri Pamungkas, and Rayhan Hannan. "So, I am highly confident that the process will be faster," Prapanca said.

He voiced hopes that Shin's expertise would effectively address the shortcomings that hampered Persija's championship title last season. Prapanca also shed light on why the management opted to hand the South Korean a long-term, three-year contract, explaining that the club required a figure who could look beyond short-term achievements to oversee a comprehensive overhaul.

Therefore, the former South Korea manager, who had been celebrated for leading his home country to a historic victory over reigning champions Germany in the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, will play an active role in upgrading Persija's infrastructure and refining their youth academy system.

"Coach Shin will also be involved in developing Persija's infrastructure, including our youth development programs. We look to accelerate everything over the next three years," Prapanca concluded.
