TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) ensures that the condition of Indonesian citizens in Iran and Israel remains safe following the escalation of conflict and exchange of missiles between the two countries since last weekend.
"Communication with Indonesian citizens continues ... until now no Indonesian citizens have become victims," said the Director of Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha Nugraha, in a written statement in Jakarta, Monday night as reported by Antara.
Judha explained that there are currently 386 Indonesian citizens in Iran, the majority of whom are students in the city of Qom. Meanwhile, there are 194 Indonesian citizens in Israel.
He stated that the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with the Indonesian Representatives in the Middle East, especially the Indonesian Embassy in Amman in Jordan, and the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran in Iran, continue to monitor the situation and dynamics in Iran and Israel as well as the condition of Indonesian citizens in the region.
However, Judha stated that there are dozens of Indonesian citizens who are stuck in Israel, Jordan, and Iran due to the escalation of the conflict.
"The Indonesian citizens who were on a short trip were stranded because the airspace was closed and flights were stopped," said Judha.
He said the Indonesian citizens consisted of 42 Indonesian pilgrims in Israel, 8 Indonesian hajj pilgrims in Jordan, and 2 Indonesian pilgrims in Tehran, Iran.
Tensions between Iran and Israel have increased sharply after coordinated airstrikes by Israel on several locations in Tehran, including civilian apartments, military and nuclear facilities, last Friday, which Iran immediately retaliated against within hours.
On Saturday night, Iran launched the second wave of Operation True Promise III targeting economic and industrial facilities in the Israeli port city of Haifa. Meanwhile, Israel retaliated again by attacking the Defense Ministry and oil depots in Tehran.
Iranian Health Ministry spokesman Hossein Kermanpour said on Monday the death toll since the start of the Israeli attacks had risen to 224 people killed and more than 1,200 injured, 90 percent of whom were civilians.
Those killed on Saturday included 60 people, half of them children, in a 14-story apartment block that was razed to the ground in the Iranian capital.
The conflict has stalled indirect nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States mediated by Oman. The sixth round of talks was due to begin Sunday in Muscat.
