Israel's Largest Refinery Shut Down After Damage from Iranian Missiles

1 day ago 20

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bazan, Israel's largest oil refinery, on Monday evening local time announced that all of its facilities at the Haifa Port have been completely closed due to damages caused by Iranian missile attacks.

Three company employees were killed in the pre-dawn strikes, sparking a fire at the strategic complex. Video recordings showed a visible blaze, and the firefighting team was still struggling to put down the fire, according to the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz.

"As a result of damage to the facilities, the power plant was significantly damaged, and therefore all of the refinery’s and subsidiary companies’ facilities were shut down," Bazan Group said in a statement to the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, according to the Israeli newspaper The Times of Israel, as reported by Anadolu.

Currently, the company is cooperating with the Israel Electric Corporation to restore power on site, the statement added.

Iranian missiles hit the Bazan oil refinery complex in Haifa on Sunday night, damaging pipeline networks and transmission lines, the Times of Israel news portal reported, citing a statement from the complex operator, Bazan Group.

The company stated that oil refining activities are ongoing, while other facilities have ceased operations.

"The power station responsible for part of the steam and electricity production used by the group's facilities sustained significant damage, alongside additional impacts," the company said in a filing with the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, as quoted from Xinhua.

"At this stage, all refinery and subsidiary facilities have been shut down."

Bazan stated that they are still assessing the extent of the damage and its impact on operations, as well as the best way to address the situation.

The Iranian attack came amid a deadly air battle that has been ongoing for four days between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Israel, and has killed at least 244 people in Iran and 24 in Israel.

The escalation was triggered by Israel's sudden airstrike on several areas in Iran last Friday.
