TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - On Monday, July 7, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump said he has scheduled talks with Iran.
"They've requested a meeting...and if we can put something down on paper, that will be fine. It'll be good," Trump told reporters at the White House, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He then added, "we'll see what happens."
Trump's Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, said the meeting would take place next week or later.
When asked about the possibility of another attack on Iran, Trump expressed his hope that the U.S. would have no need for that. "I hope we're not going to have to do that. I can't imagine wanting to do that. I can't imagine them wanting to do that. They want to meet...they want to work something out," Trump said, as reported by Antara on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
The U.S. President assessed that Iran has changed significantly compared to two weeks ago, and he hopes this tension will end soon. "I hope it's over. Yeah, I think Iran wants to meet. I think they want to make peace, and I'm all for it," he said.
Meanwhile, regarding Syria, Trump said the U.S. lifted sanctions on the country at the request of many countries in the Middle East. "We took the sanctions off (Syria) because we want to give them a chance," he said.
Trump also admitted that he wants to lift the harsh U.S. sanctions on Iran at the right time. " would love to be able to, at the right time, take those sanctions off (Iran), give them a chance at rebuilding, because I'd like to see Iran build itself back up in a peaceful manner and not going around saying, 'Death to America,' 'Death to the USA,' 'Death to Israel,' as they were doing," Trump said.
Previously, on June 22, 2025, US B-2 bomber planes dropped 14 GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bombs, known as bunker-busting bombs, on the nuclear sites in Fordo and Natanz, Iran.
In addition, dozens of Tomahawk cruise missiles launched from submarines were fired at nuclear facilities in Isfahan as part of Washington's campaign against Iran's nuclear program. The sixth round of talks between the U.S. and Iran was supposed to take place on June 15, 2025, but Israel conducted an airstrike on Iran's military, nuclear, and civilian sites on June 13.
The 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran ended with a U.S.-brokered ceasefire and took effect on June 24.
