Why Is Mount Rinjani a Risky Climb for Beginners? Expert Explains

5 hours ago 10

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chairprtson of the Indonesian Mountain Guides Association, Rahman Mukhlis, emphasized that Mount Rinjani is not suitable for beginner climbers.

His statement came in response to growing discussions on social media following the recent incident involving Juliana de Souza Pereira Marins, a 27-year-old Brazilian citizen, on the volcano located in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.

Rahman explained that Mount Rinjani, which rises to 3,726 meters above sea level, has a moderate to high level of difficulty. He said that anyone wishing to climb Indonesia's second-highest volcano should have prior experience hiking other mountains, particularly those over 2,500 meters.

"Especially mountains with an altitude of 2,500 meters," he said on Friday, June 27, 2025.

He advised aspiring climbers to first gain experience by hiking easier routes. For those still eager to climb Rinjani, he stressed the importance of being fully prepared. "Prepare physical and technical abilities thoroughly, professional guidance is necessary," Rahman said.

Rahman outlined several preparations for novice climbers, including physical readiness, technical skills such as mountain knowledge and climbing techniques, a positive mindset, and environmental awareness. Climbers also need to prepare personal documents, gear, supplies, and meals.

"Check your health, ensure you are fit. Use travel insurance, which can be included in a tour package with a tour operator," he added.

He also urged climbers to study the characteristics of the mountain they plan to hike. Tour operator guidelines, mountain management rules, and instructions from guides should be followed closely.

Earlier, tragic news emerged from Mount Rinjani, where Juliana de Souza Pereira Marins fell near the caldera on Saturday, June 21, 2025. She was found dead and evacuated on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

Reports indicate that Marins fell into a ravine about 600 meters deep at an altitude of more than 2,700 meters above sea level.

The handling of Marins' evacuation by the search and rescue team has sparked mixed reactions, with some offering praise and others expressing criticism. Supporters generally emphasized that Mount Rinjani is not suitable for beginner climbers.

Prior to the incident, Marins had been hiking with five other foreign tourists and a local guide. It remains unclear whether she had prior experience climbing mountains.

She was better known as a traveler who had visited many countries in Asia and often shared her journeys on social media as a travel influencer.
