TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - World leaders at the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada on Monday urged U.S. President Donald Trump to halt his trade war, as it poses a risk to global economic stability.
As reported by CNA, at the summit where host Canada sought to avoid triggering Trump's anger and focus on conflicts in the Middle East, leaders still urged Trump to cease higher import tariffs on countries worldwide as early as next month.
Most G7 countries have already been subjected to a 10 percent base tariff by Trump, with European countries and Japan also facing additional levies on cars, steel, and aluminum.
G7 leaders used the meeting to sit down with Trump privately, making a case to the U.S. leader to seal a deal that would eliminate the threat of even steeper U.S. import tariffs.
A source at the summit said that French President Emmanuel Macron urged Trump to end the trade dispute immediately.
In the official session, leaders also warned Trump that import tariffs could bring serious harm to the world economy.
"Several participants asked to end the tariff dispute as soon as possible," said a senior German official to journalists on the condition of anonymity.
They argued that the dispute weakened the G7 economy and "in the end will only strengthen China," the official said.
Trump used the summit to formally sign a deal announced in May with the UK. This makes the UK the first country to secure a trade agreement with the U.S. to avoid Trump's threat of hefty levies.
"I like them. That's the ultimate protection," Trump told reporters after his meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the sidelines of the G7.
Trade Talks
Trade issues became Canada's primary concern after the Trump administration announced several additional levies on Canadian imports in recent months. This has made the future of Canada's northern neighbor's economy very uncertain.
After the meeting between Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney, the Canadian government indicated that both parties could reach a trade truce within the next 30 days.
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba told reporters in Canada that he spoke with Trump for 30 minutes to discuss ways for a solution "in line with Japan's national interests," according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK.
There was hope that non-G7 countries expected to attend the meeting on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, would also have an equal amount of time with Trump. However, this hope faded as Trump decided to cut his attendance short due to the Israel-Iran conflict.
Leaders from South Korea, India, Brazil, and South Africa will arrive at the summit at a resort in the Canadian Rocky Mountains after Trump leaves.
Dozens of countries are negotiating with Washington to reach a trade pact before the U.S. imposes strict retaliatory tariffs, which will take effect on July 9.
